First error - the Good Friday Agreement says nothing about a border between the two halves of Ireland. Second error - you forgot one of the options which is to have the โ€˜wallโ€™ dividing Ireland but without actually building a physical wall. But the EU rejected that idea...

Which is Why I am disgusted that people are trying To Blame America for the Brexit, even though Trump's Wall was to deal with Illegal Crossers of the Border, which even Mexico wants to help with. The Brexit clearly is set in the UK and EU, with UK wanting to supercede.

We should draw a quantum border that's in a superposition state of being there and not being there. And then make sure noone looks at it lest the probability wave collapses and all hell breaks loose.

Ah that's the flag of French Guiana which is an overseas territory of them....despite it being in South America. Since it's technically a part of France it's also a part of the EU.

so, i came up with a 4th option, the UK conquers the rest of Ireland and walls it off completely. Full Brexit and fancy new Irish land to call her own.

If you had told the UK population this before the referendum we might not be in the Brexit mess! Best account of Brexit I have heard. Maybe you can teach MP's how to communicate.

To be fair there is a viable option for Britain which is to take the no deal option, apply for free trade with everyone on WTO, then refuse to put up a border on the British side of the Irish border. This solves all Britains problems with the Brexit negotiations while simultaneously creating huge issues for the EU. At that point either the EU instructs Ireland to put up a wall on the border, which they will refuse to do, or puts up a border between Ireland and mainland Europe, the preferred outcome for Britain. Our problem is that we have a Europhile government who is desperately trying to save the EU at the British expense because acting in Britain's best interest basically destroys the European project. If we had even a half competent government the EU has literally no leverage in the negotiations and we could just take what we wanted.
Malakree
Malakree Klukkustund sรญรฐan
+viktor1496 Part of universal free trade is NOT imposing tariffs. The point is that Britain having free trade with the world, no border on the Irish border and then the EU having no border between Ireland and the EU means that the EU's protection racket can now be circimvented by anyone in the world by just going Belfast, Dublin, continental Europe. Either the UK becomes very rich from the situation or the EU has to put up a border in the channel. Whichever the EU then collapses due to it's inability to maintain the protection racket. Hence the Europhile government comment. Almost every point in the "deal" is about protecting the EU at the expense of the UK. At this point a no deal situation where we refuse to put up an Irish border is easily the best one.
viktor1496
viktor1496 10 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
Except it is the UK which wants the border with the EU..... that's actually one of the major points why people voted to leave. If you leave an open border with Ireland, everyone from the EU can just come flying in and walk into UK territory without any checks.....surely you see the problem there? Also Imagine the UK imposing import tariffs on some goods.... you need border checks for that. Stop blaming everything on a government which is not europhile at all. They shot down a second referendum.... does that sound "europhile" to you?

The reason for delay is the MPs in Parliament don't represent votes cast in the Referendum. We could solve it with a General Election if we had Proportional Representation instead of First Past The Post. The people said what they wanted, Parliament isn't doing what it was told.

I heard that the people of Northern Ireland voted to remain. So it is the obvious solution that they leave the UK and let the people all have what they want. Let the leavers have their island and the remainers have theirs.

Daniel Butchers 18 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
its really simple we stop treating the EU as one country and stick to our agreement to not the a hard border in, if the EU want to have a border there because they are worried about good sneaking in that way then fine let them make Ireland put the border in, because our agreement with is with Ireland not the EU it is them we should be talking to about it not the EU, and if the EU want to make us negotiate with them before we can talk to others well they should be made to wait and see what we decide with Ireland

I think the solution to this problem is easy for the UK. Simply conquer the rest of Ireland again and draw the wall around that, problem solved and it grants the nifty little benefit of possibly restarting the British empire again.

NoFaithNoPain Degi Sรญรฐan sรญรฐan
You don't need a wall. Its a falsehood. Maybe customs checks on the EU side, which can be done at a distance or electronically. This already happens with agriculture, VAT and excise, but its called "friction less trade". Only two weeks ago a cow with blue tongue disease was seized whilst being shipped across the border. We have already said in a no deal brexit we just won't bother doing anything and its up to the EU to put something there. Simples.

Ah, Britain. Continuing it's age-old tradition of fucking up the entire world for no reason other than to assuage its microscopic self confidence and pettiness. Let the UK crash out of the EU with no deal and keep them out forever. At that point, Northern Ireland and Scotland might actually grow a fucking spine and leave the UK.
Phil Wyss
Phil Wyss Degi Sรญรฐan sรญรฐan
yep, the equation is: brexit = Northern Ireland is an independent EU state
Herr Schmidt
Herr Schmidt 5 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
+Phil Wyss No, Gibraltar has been english for so long that it is more about economic ties than ethnical which made it a surprisingly unimportant issue. But Spain has different regions with seperatistic movements, one of them Catalonia, which recently tried to accomplish independence. So every seperatist movement most likely gets opposed by Spain to prevent a precedent. But even movements which succeed with mutual agreement will get vetoed by Spain to prevent translating little states right back into the EU, which would remove all the downsides Catalonia would have from a divorce. But also the Basque region might rise up again once it sees its chance, which then would involve France as well. All solved conflicts which would have vanished in a few decades had Europe move further towards a Union of regions rather than stagnating as a collection of national states. This means Nothern Ireland would have to become either part of Ireland (which the UK could no allow because of the british population) or cut ties with Ireland (which would essentially mean canceling in spirit the Good Friday Agreement, and therefore would mean the UK declares war on the IRA).
Phil Wyss

+Amazonian Cannibal you said UK is willing to Delay the Brexit. thats not an solution, that is called pushing the problems to an later date. not to mention it doesnt solve anything in itself. UK wont be out of EU and none will be happy and if by "EU has said" you meant Juncker said that, and to which he in the same interview added " Half memberships and cherry-picking aren't possible. In Europe you eat what's on the table or you don't sit at the table."

Amazonian Cannibal 15 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
+Saberspear No, you mean the UK hasn't implemented Brexit yet. I just gave you the solution, as asked. Where is the problem? Maybe the EU should work for the people a bit quicker. Decades! See the problem!? And the EU has said on many occassions it wants to make an exmaple of the Uk to stop any other country leaving.
Saberspear
Saberspear 15 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
+Amazonian Cannibal ... But UK hasnt delayed Brexit. thats why this has been such an problem. These has been negotiation for the brexit that has been closing in for 2 years without UK giving an alternative solution to these problems. And no, you cant really implement separate laws at speed which would solve the problems right at hand. In comparison Switzerland isnt in EU but has been for decades now been negotiating with EU to reach the status it has now Also I added "not because we hate UK" because you seem intent on having EU punish UK.
Amazonian Cannibal
Amazonian Cannibal 16 klukkustundum sรญรฐan
+Saberspear Why tell me you "do not hate UK"? Until then, I did not think that you might. The UK says there is/will be a technical solution to the transfer of goods. OK. The UK is prepared to delay full Brexit until the technical solution is implemented. OK. It is the EU that's prepared and threatening to tear up the GFA by immediately putting up a border. And letโ€™s be fair, there are some in Ireland looking to use this situation to unify Ireland as well. If the UK can pass laws to accommodate Ireland, then so can the EU. If it wanted to.

I have family in southern Ireland which is known as the Republic of Ireland or the R.O.I and they've lived there for 50000 years (they don't know exact date just it predates 0AD), they told me how the EU forced them to accept the EU laws and currency back in the 90s which caused the troubles due to the fuck up of the economy which was because the Euro costs less than what they had before the Euro, so everything went up in price, but the money they got in the exchange rate was less than they actually had and most couldn't afford to pay to live. After a few years things levelled out but they told us never to accept the European rule. However as for walls, no one is having walls, we're just having the ability to make our own laws and to not be told by Brussels and Germany how to live in our own country. Kinda like Switzerland.

They need to leave the EU ... hopefully, they crash out and make a mess on the way out ... ideally killing the German/Belgian state before it has too much control over the rest of Europe. As Britain may not be a free country anymore but maybe other nations may be able to escape before they get ruined by EU bureaucracy and the culture of censorship and political persecution spreads.

It baffles me how many people are suggesting that Ireland should leave the EU as well. Why would they do that? They're not the ones who voted to leave. Why in the world should they do something they don't want to make things easier for the UK? And why would they ever want to unite with the UK, as some people are suggesting? Why would they want to lose their independence to a country that caused them so much harm? This the UK's problem. They're the ones that have to fix it. Don't drag other countries into it.

But it's more political. After May shot herself in her face with an unnecessary and promised against election, she had to get the DUP on side. Look into the Orange Men... Yes, they rationally believe marching with bowler hats on rubbing their Catholic brethren up the wrong way is a right. As part of the UK, the DUP, as Unionists hold being inline with the UK as the biggest thing - well except for the weird independent bits they want to differ on - "pro-life" being one. Oh and they also voted against the Good Friday Agreement. Yes, they're batshit crazy, about a democratically sane as North Korea and almost as scary.

1:) All Brits fall on quick and extreme propaganda on Brexit by some of few politicians in the parliament who wanted Great Britain all for their own. That's the result of a short decision without a long term result impact. I'm from Slovenia btw and this is my point of view of conspiracy that began in 2014. 2:) A lot of websites that promote Brexit are Clickbait tested by Malwarebytes like www.thesun.co.uk, www.express.co.uk, www.globalresearch.ca, and www.dailymail.co.uk. No to mention BOTS operating by Russian that impact even the election of Donald Trump. Clickbait is content whose main purpose is to attract attention and deceive visitors into clicking on a hyperlink to a particular web page. Clickbait often leads to the content of questionable value. 3:) Conclusion, the plots were made by Boris (promoting lack of full informationโ€™s), Theresa (insisting the benefits without exposing the reality) and etc. by corrupted data and some corrupted members of parliaments and media who just seeking the power of interests without worries of the nation. I think the peoples need to know the truth about plots, bigotry, and corruption that some patriots and fanatics do to obtain whatโ€™s they want.

So... eh... what about the UK leaves the Union and stuff but has a separate open borders arrangement with Ireland only? Out of the 5 Nordic countries only 3 are members of the EU, (Norway and Iceland are not). But we still have the Nordic open borders agreement so all the borders are open.

If I remember right, the issue there is that while Norway and Iceland aren't part of the EU, they still very well negotiated trade deals with the EU. They are both part of EFTA and the EEA. And since they have part in that, they are part of the EU single market. It means that they have to be part of the freedom of movement within the EU as well. The UK doesn't want that.

Meanwhile over at Sargon Land... *Harpsichord sound effect* Sure this was always going to be BAD but actually this is political maneuvering that you don't understand, Brexit was always a good idea because money tree and brown people are in fact scary and you know, it's actually 4d chess, because Farage is a genius... I think there is an easy solution. You give the Irish and people in NI a special permit where they can cross the border. You put up some set amount of ยฃ that doing business is OK and rest is on tariffs. That would make it possible for flexible movement within limits but would not let big corporations use Ireland as a back door to the UK markets. Politicians are making this harder because it is in their interest to make it hard. I mean Finland and Norway have something like this going on and seems to work pretty well.

+Sir Jaojao yes, I know that, I'm just thinking out loud that how is it possible that these are the only options on the table. No deal would really hurt parts of EU economy, I mean it won't be the end of EU, but I'm not sure EU needs a lot more people hating it? So chop chop tummies in.

Finland is part of the EU, and Norway is part of various Europe-wide trade agreements, which brexiteers want to avoid

+IreneShardaForever Findland is part of the EU. These things are never set in stone, EU wants to make an example of the UK so that the whole block doesn't dissolve. I think that part has been established, now it should also look at how detrimental not having a trade deal with the UK will be. So giving in a bit on this manner, would allow the trade deal to go ahead. It is unfathomable that these are the only options on the table. UK is a 2.5 trillion economy, and no deal would directly be linked to 200 000 manufacturing jobs in the EU as well. Without a deal everyone loses, so would you rather have more disgruntled people who voted for Brexit or forget these 'moral principles' and save yourself in the long run.

I think Finland is part of the EU. Norway isn't, but it IS part of the EFTA and the EEA thus making it part of the EU single market and all that that entails. Those who want max brexit don't want that.
Jacob White
Jacob White 2 dรถgum sรญรฐan
What about Hong Kong and China then. The UK should just be a bit more flexible and see the opportunities of having one part of the territory in the EU while the other is out. China does wield great powers with Hong Kong being an in/out territory...

Dont fall for this biased guff. The answer is simple, no hard border, Norway exists with no hard border to the EU and they are not members. Remainers are using this to attempt to subvert Brexit. Its amusingly futile because the EU is going to die one way or another. Attempts to resist the EU demise will only serve to harm you. Its time remainers came to terms with the facts and started to compromise. Most brexiteers arent interested in walls, it was not our "whole thing". Most of us are interested in bringing ultimate parliamentary sovereignty to Westminster, giving us the ability to make our own trade deals and the ability to control or limit total numbers on immigration.
Michael Morgan
Michael Morgan Degi Sรญรฐan sรญรฐan
โ€‹+Sir Jaojao Can you give me a good reason why the EU cant give tariff free access to the single market? It gives hundreds of other foreign sovereign nations tariff free access usually in exchange of tariff free access to their markets. The only difference we have is we are bargaining to lose benefits rather than gain them. Oh and we happen to comply with European standards and regulations on the day we leave. Oh and the EU will collapse. At least it will if it doesnt reform. Euroslepticism across the continent has been steadily growing for years and doesnt appear to be going away. I think that this stubbornness is the reason we have euroskepticism and the brexit vote. The EU seems to only want to move in its own direction and does not pay attention to the democratic will of the people who effectively put them in power.
Sir Jaojao
Sir Jaojao Degi Sรญรฐan sรญรฐan
But Norway is part of various Europe-wide trade agreements that brexiteers want to avoid. Also it's not that inevitable that the EU will collapse, it could very well continue for many years more

The delicious irony of all this is that the English with their Brexit vote may well end up causing the partition of the island of Britain, whilst simultaneously causing the reunification of the island of Ireland, and the English say the Irish are stupid, LOL! Then again the English, in their dealings with the Irish, never grasped the difference between being an eejit and acting the eejit.

I,m german, so pls dont mind if i make some grammar mistakes. Its really sad the uk leaves us alone, as our partner in the eu as a more north and conservative opposition to the south country's. Also its maybe a allrdy to often used argument but think about, how far we came since those totally stupid world wars. I feel like we as European, should stay together as on strong unit against bigger country's like the USA, China etc. On the other hand, the uk voted to leave by their citizens, now they gotta do what they wanted. I hope they find a good solution for both side at the end of the day.

You sound like a good friend. However, you say we need to stand together to oppose countries within the EU; so the EU can oppose countries outside of the EU. Do you see the problem? The EU will either implode, or explode, yet we have no control of either scenario. Did you get to vote for the EU President? Neither did I. The EU does not want to compete with China, it wants to emulate it. Don't worry, we clearly have no democracy in the UK today, so we will not be going anywhere soon.

Marvin spitz, grammar and spelling apart, you make a lot of sense, personally as your country tried ,nearly successfully to kill me in 1941 I am still finding it hard to like you! If only what you are suggesting had been understood by the E.U. Commission instead of its drive to conquer every member of the E.U. I would agree with you. Sadly the break up is near. Go your own way, and hope for the best.

Why would they do that? They're not the ones who voted to leave. Why would they do something they don't want just to make things easier for the UK? This is the UK's problem. They're the ones who have to fix it.

If you follow rugby, do you recall how after changing the engaging rules of scrum things were messy? They try different systems , player didn't get it right at first, BUT ALSO THE REFEREES DIDN'T, A LOT OF INCONSISTENCY, so imagine that BUT A MILLIONS TIME both in laws and time, both civilians AND ALL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, the amount of time it will take for the actual public servant to a new set of rules OMG!!!! 20 years will pass minimum just to adjust , and again the main problem is not the paper work (witch is TITANIC) but the mind set of PEOPLE, witch is THE REAL HARD TASK, specially when your ur going from simple to more complicate. I guess this "psychological" aspect of Brexit may be be an interesting topic for a CGP Grey video.

I want to point out the reference to the Netherlands at 0:40 because it's super cute how she's just eating Hagien (I think that's how it's spelt) but also, that it's a (possible) reference to one of his Q&A videos. He said that his mother is Dutch and I think that the Netherlands being include is a neat shoutout to his own mom.

There's another problem. If the UK did go for maximum brexit, it is very likely that Scotland would leave the country, staying with the EU. (They voted in favour of that) Even if The UK solved the crisis in Ireland, there would still be a land border between the UK and the EU.

Could they just grant the Republic of Ireland an exemption* to the rules they abide by with the rest of the EU? Or does that violate EU law or something?
Sir Jaojao
Sir Jaojao Degi Sรญรฐan sรญรฐan
That would mean border checks somewhere on Ireland, which would violate either the Good Friday agreement or the "no wall in the UK" promise
Noschool100
Noschool100 3 dรถgum sรญรฐan
exempting ireland from to the rules means they'd have different rules from the EU so there would need to be a customs check and border between ireland and the EU, Which ireland wouldn't want as they want to stay in the EU single market.
sdcr
sdcr 3 dรถgum sรญรฐan
If we are willing to discuss a border within the UK, why do we not equally discuss a border within the EU? That is, a border between the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the EU.
